Potatoes to the importance

Egg and chips done, more wine? The very approachable Madremía to boot!

A couple of weekends ago saw the inaugural summit of the Spanish Wine Collective. Looking for strong reds and hearty dishes we chose the chilly lands of Zamora and Toro. The weather didn’t disappoint, albeit a little nippy for our Andalucían contingent!

On the agenda, first and foremost, wine! But we were all looking forward to meeting as a collective for the first time and for some, face-to-face for the first time.

Madrid, Huelva, Galicia and Macclesfield…now there’s a mix!

It started with a beer in Zamora’s Plaza Mayor…the meeting point. Don’t be fooled by the sun!

To warm our cockles we dived into the highly recommended Los Caprichos de Meneses for the Cecina of dreams.

I’m not sure Toro was quite ready for us…SWC rolling into town.

Having tried to organise a few winery visits, the planning was more complicated than expected. Thanks to Antony and Mar for their hospitality at Dominio del Bendito (once we found the winery 😉).

We enjoyed the wines at Dominio Bendito, a little Saturday morning tasting to get us ready for lunch. Thanks to Mar for hosting us on a Saturday (when they’re not usually open). Reviews to follow, but not of the wines from Toro you’d expect!

With the chilly wind, this Arroz a la Zamorana hit the spot at the wonderful Divina Proporción. Along with the other 5 dishes…siesta required!

Big night in Toro, Saturday night. We hit the best bar in town, La Esquina de Colás. The San Román came out.

Being Sunday, it called for something divine and these Cantabrian anchovies answered our prayers.

Next, onto the young goat chops…’Tenemos carne’ is a phrase you hear often in these lands. We nearly lost our Galician rep at this point, fortunately he’s still with us!

And to finish this food photo odyssey, patatas a la importancia, a star dish. Humble and truly representative of the area.

We came in search of hearty reds and quality produce and we found both. Trying to organise winery visits was tricky and to quote from our first ever blog post ‘meticulous planning often leads to disappointment in Spain,’ but hey, we were together, we shared wines, we dined well….what more do we need!

The only question remaining…where should the 2023 SWC Summit be?
