I’ll hold my hands up, when I think of Valencia I think of Spain’s national dish (just checking who’s truly paying attention here) and crazy firework festivals. I don’t naturally think of wine, but that’s about to change…
To start, let’s be honest, I think I’ve been slightly spoilt with Celler del Roure’s Maduresa as my first outing. But I didn’t know that before I opened the bottle!
The wine is so inviting in the glass, really bright. On the nose, there’s nice dried herbs (or if I wasn’t a lad from Manchester…’garrigue’). With these guys being in the south west of the region and close (ish) to Jumilla, my mind was on autopilot thinking something dark and brooding…especially given the Monastrell.
Expecting heaviness, I was surprised and hit with softness, elegance even…showing real freshness. There’s lovely black fruits, thinking blackcurrants, and the oak is just perfectly integrated.
All in all it makes for a very drinkable wine - trust me! Distinctively Mediterranean, but refined and certainly gluggable!
I expected fireworks from Valencia and I certainly got them!
