Pago de Valdoneje 2020 - Vinos Valtuille

D.O. Bierzo

Varieties – 100% Mencía

ABV - 14%

£8.95 from The Wine Society

With a Mencía at £8.95 I expected a real joven wine…all bright fruit and quite straightforward, which is a style I like by the way. But this was much more serious than that.

I opened it on the day the UK fried, serving it chilled almost - Mencía being a great wine to do this with.

On the nose it was super aromatic - red fruits, thinking strawberries, raspberries with cherries and a touch of white pepper.

In the mouth it was savoury, quite serious. Again with this lick of white pepper. There was some tannin for sure and a little dry and smokey.

At this price I was expecting way less, hence it went in the fridge under that pretense. But it delivers way beyond, especially for under a tenner. Hats off to Vinos Valtuille and The Wine Society!
